In my experience, O'Reilly marketing isn't annoying.  So far, they've done a 
good job to restrict themselves to notifying me about stuff that I'm 
interested in.  I don't really see any downsides.  It sounds like it's 
basically a user group registry that comes with a few nice benefits and no 
real drawback.
