Your best best going forward is probably to look into PAS (Pluggable
Authentication Service).  I believe there is a branch in Plone SVN that
works with PAS (though I doubt it's release quality) -- ask around on
#plone.  I think Plone is going to move away from GRUF in favor of PAS
in the future.
