There are two things I recommend that might not be obvious at first. 
One is to periodically use the Preview button when you're editing a 
page so that you extend the timeout lock on the page until you're done 
so that others don't overwrite your edits. The other is to make sure 
that you open links in a new window while editing and periodically copy 
the text from the text box of the page you're working on to your 
clipboard, perhaps even paste it in a local editor window as a backup. 
The reason for the latter suggestion is that it is relatively easy to 
hit the Back button in the browser or follow a link on the page you're 
editing and depending on how your browser handles the back button, you 
might find you've lost your edits unless you have a copy somewhere. So, 
to avoid frustration, it is easier to just always be defensive when 
editing a wiki page.
