Great - I just tried this, and now everything seems to work fine!
For anybody on the mailing list who is interested, I'm now using:

Python 2.5.1
Numpy 1.0.1 (the Ubuntu package is called python-numpy (you should also 
install python-dev))
NetCDF-3.6.2
ScientificPython-2.7.6
MMTK-2.5.20
