The upcoming release 1.8.4 of VMD will include a plugin that reads
MMTK trajectory files directly. It is not even necessary to have MMTK
(or even Python) installed. Needless to say, this is a lot faster
than the current approach of creating a temporary PDB/DCD file pair.
It is also simpler, because the trajectory can be opened directly
from within VMD.
Those who want to try this out immediately can download the test
release 1.8.4b13, which already includes the new plugin. Instructions
for downloading test release can be found at

Animations started via MMTK routines will continue to use PDB/DCD
files for the time being, as most VMD users will be at version 1.8.3
or earlier for a while. The time penalty is also much less severe in
that case, because there is no trajectory to open and convert.
