Here is the script. Put it into /usr/local/bin/vmd and make it  
executable, and point PDBVIEWER to it:

#!/bin/bash
xterm -e '/Applications/VMD  
1.8.2.app/Contents/Resources/VMD.app/Contents/MacOS/VMD' $*

(That's two lines, not three.)
